I took my 2006 4.2 ZF auto QP5 to The MOT station today. It failed due to the parking brake not being sufficiently powerful. I can see the cables moving in the boot when the handbrake is applied, however it is not providing enough force to hold the car. I did notice that there was quite a lot of play in the cables. I did have some water ingress in the boot, about a month ago (following injudicious pressure washing) I wonder how this might be connected. I will try to adjust the handbrake in each of the rear hubs and also lubricate the cables in the boot.
On the way back from the MOT, I unplugged the big socket on the handbrake mechanism in the boot and plugged it back in in case it was not making a good enough contact. This did not fix the handbrakes but it does seem to have affected how the auto gearbox changes Gear. manual gear change is fine on the paddles, however, the auto changes have become a bit reluctant and toggling between sport and non-sport will make it change up but it is not consistent.
Could these be connected?
